This project recovers an early ‘900 two -storey house, transforming a garage in a terrace and an old storage space in a private courtyard. The house is developed on two floors plus an attic for a total of 240 sqm, where the garage roof has been converted into a terrace that can be reached from the first floor and the storage room into a private courtyard accessible through the kitchen. The house is the headblock of a traditional multi-storey courtyard building, with the main facade along the road and pitched roof. The interior walls of the house were demolished except for the spine wall on the ground floor, preserving an arch-shaped opening. The foundations were consolidated while the intermediate slab was completely rebuilt in dry wood, leaving the iron structure that supports it exposed. The perimetral brick walls were not involved in this demolition-construction operation, except for the restoring of the mortars and the window openings. The roof, rebuilt before this intervention, was also left untouched. The opportunity to design the interior spaces from the beginning allowed to place the staircase on the right side of the entrance, obtaining a wide living area and, most importantly, an access point to the garage roof, now flat and converted into a terrace. The living room, characterized by a concrete sitting spot and fireplace, was placed on the ground floor, together with the kitchen and the dining room, facing one another. A private courtyard, obtained with the partial uncovering of the storage, is accessible through the kitchen. The family living in this house can now take advantage of these two outdoor spaces, recovered transforming existing elements. On the upper floor there are two large bedrooms, a bathroom and a laundry room; the master bedroom has a private bathroom and is equipped with a walk-in closet. On the ground floor was laid a microcement floor while upstairs was chosen an oak wood floor, and the treads of the new concrete staircase block cladded in iron.Iron elements can be found on the ground floor too since the structure has remained visible. The garage volume and the courtyard sides were painted black, in order to enhance the central block of the house: all the iron elements - railings, doors and parapets – are black and with thin sections.
